WHAT IS HUXS??? by Amber Paige
Howard University’s Extra Space (HUXS) is a storage facility available to all of Howard University’s students, located at 2301 Georgia Ave, between the HUBookstore and Starbucks and across the street from McDonalds. It is both convenient and accessible to students, providing the affordable storage space some need during the school year and over the breaks.
HUXS is marketable to students because Howard has students from all over the United States as well as abroad. Students that do not have a house within close proximity of D.C. to keep their dorm items in face several issues, such as not being able to afford taking all of their belongings home, limited space in their suitcases, and shipping boxes home. HUXS is also marketable because there are not many storage facilities close to the campus. Competitors are very expensive and/or inconveniently located. Even competing storage facilities that have transportation of belongings aren’t reliable when it comes to time management. Additionally, HUXS would be an opportunity for work-study, offering employment to students of several majors and all classifications.
The essential service of HUXS will be a storage facility explicitly for Howard University students. HUXS offers a free consultation to students so they may become familiar with the facility and its reliability prior to storing with it. HUXS will also have an Opening Event (date is pending), hosted by Ingersoll Rand and there will be an RSVP list for the first 100 students who want to store here. Look out for the HUXS Panel coming up in the Spring 2011 semester, where the company’s heads will discuss the benefits, security and prices of HUXS and students will be welcomed to further inquire.
The prices for storing with Howard University’s Extra Space were determined by averaging the charges of top competitors (U-Store, Public Storage, Door-to-Door, E-Z Storage, and U-Haul). The majority of students surveyed preferred monthly and lump sum payments, so the payment plan was constructed accordingly. The monthly plan is based on one calendar month. The lump sum payments provide a $5 discount to the monthly rate. Lump sum payments were also broken down into three options: Fall semester (Aug-Jan), Spring semester (Jan-May), and Summer break (May-Aug). In the table below, the competitors’ avg. prices are in blue andHUXS prices are in red.

21st CAP PROGRAM
The 21st Century Advantage Program (21st CAP ) aids as a substantial advocate for Howard University’s educational progressions. The program strives to assist beginning college students for success in the School Of Business student body. Catering to the special needs of undergraduate business students, the program contains both a strong learning environment as well as a motivational setting for new students beginning at the freshman level. The School Of Business has established The Corporate Team Adoption Program, where company’s adopt and sponsor teams (freshman and transfer students grouped in order to work on teamwork and leadership skills). The Fortune 500 Company and team stay in continuous contact to the point where a relationship is formed so that the companies become actively involved in educating, and developing students in order for them to become actively successful, and valuable employees. The 21st Program is a firsthand advantage into the business world, handling lack of motivation, lack of academic preparation; lack of parental involvement; financial aid problems; and lack of information concerning the University increases problem solving skills and determination. The program instills teamwork, character, academic achievement, as well as the right attitude for success.
